Earliest Cachagua Inhabitants
Cachaqua, or Jasshagua as it was referred to in a 1875 survey of this area in 2875, had been inhabited by Esselen Indians for as long as for 6500 years ago. They lived in Cachagua area and their territory included the Santa Lucia Mountains, Ventanna wilderness area and what is now the Los Padres National Forest. They also inhabited the area east of Cachagua which includes the upper Carmel River and the Arroyo Seco river on down to Soledad and Greenfield.
It was thought the Esselen People went culturally extinct based on coming into contact with missionaries from the three local California Missions, which were among the earliest in California. However there is evidence many escaped the disease of the missionaries by retreating into the rugged mountains, perhaps in the Cachagua area.
Cachagua was and still is today a remote and rugged community attracting people who are looking for peace, quiet and tranquility along with privacy. Many have found Cachaqua to be a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of life in the city. In 1967 a zen monastery was founded in the rugged mountains near Cachagua at the Tassajara Hot Springs, located just over Chew’s Ridge pass at 5000 ft. elevation.
Carmel Valley is know for great wine and the Cachagua area is becoming ground zero for some of the great wimes being grown in the area. With it’s higher elevations and steeper slopes of granite, and it’s warmer temperatures, Cachagua has become particularly good for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals. Heller Estates, Bernardus, Morgan, Joulian, Galante and more all grow and bottle in the area. If you are looking great land to start a vineyard this is a great place.
