Pacific Grove Ocean View Cottage for Sale
Pacific Grove cottages are among the most desirable homes in Pacific Grove, especially cottages with Ocean and Monterey Bay views. This particular cottage was designed and build in 1934 by none other than M.J. Murphy, who has been called one of the most prolific builders on the Monterey Peninsula. The English Country style home is sited just a couple of homes above Ocean View Blvd in Pacific Grove on an oversized triple lot and has fantastic views of the Monterey Bay and the whitewater from the waves crashing against the granite outcroppings of the PG coastline. The location is fantastic, with Cannery Row just a few blocks up the coast and Lovers Point, Downtown Pacific Grove just a few minutes away as well. The beloved bike and walking trail is just outside and across Ocean View Blvd, making this an ideal place to call home or as a weekend getaway.
Behind the privacy fence, a brick walkway leads you through a
nicely landscaped front yard to a charming English Country cottage with stucco walls, a high-pitched roof, storybook windows with shutters and a small, covered porch. The roof is wood shake shingles as you would expect for a home from this era. The curb appeal is a 10 out of 10 and the current owner gets many compliments from those passing by.
Walking through the arched front door leads you two a small entry hall with the bedrooms and bath on the right, and the living space on the left. The living room is surprisingly spacious with lots of natural light and beautiful whitewater views of the Pacific Grove coastline and the Monterey Bay. The day I was there to write this, there was a huge school of dolphins frolicking in the bay near Lovers Point! In addition to the Dolphins, sea otters, whales, sea birds, sea lions, harbor seals and other sea life will be a part of your daily life when you live in this part of Pacific
Grove. There is a nice fireplace and hardwood floors in this room as well.
Beyond the living room is a dining room that is attached to a vintage kitchen. Both the dining room and the kitchen have views of the water. The dining room has an arched transition from the living room, and it gets tons of natural light.
The kitchen looks to be original with older cabinets and appliances and has not appear to have received a serious remodel over the years. The vintage tile seems to be holding up as do most of the cabinets, but I am sure whoever buys this special home will ultimately remodel the kitchen. It also has a utility room off the kitchen that leads to a large approximately 344 square foot covered sunroom located at the back of the house.
There are two bedrooms, both with wood floors and plaster walls. There is a nicely remodeled bathroom between the two bedrooms with an ample sized walk-in shower, newer vanity and nice tilework that goes with the rest of the home.
The yard is well landscaped and has several opportunities to set up great outdoor areas to take advantage of the views and the fantastic weather the Monterey Peninsula has to offer year-round. The entire property appears to be fenced and there is even a gate for the driveway that leads to the single garage, but there is plenty of off-street parking, something that can be a commodity in beach towns like Pacific Grove, especially in the summer months.

Provenance regarding the architect and builder of this home

About Architect and Builder M.J. Murphy
M.J Murphy is known as one of the most prolific designers and builders on the Monterey Peninsula and had a large part in shaping the character of the city of Carmel By The Sea. He designed and built over 300 homes in Carmel starting with his mother’s cottage in 1902, which was relocated in the early 1990’s and is called First Murphy House. It is now appropriately home to the Carmel Heritage Society.
With no formal training as an architect, Murphy didn’t have a particular style of architecture that he followed, which is one of the things that makes his architecture so interesting. A good example of this is his mother’s home, which is a Craftsman Bungalow with Victorian Queen Anne windows. But as his experience grew, so did his reputation for building a good home, so he was soon in demand. He built over 300 homes in Carmel in his career on the Peninsula and countless other homes in Monterey, Carmel Valley and even some in Pacific Grove. His most notable accomplishments are the Highlands Inn, the Carmel Art Association, the Harrison Memorial Library, The Pine Inn, Sea View House.
Murphy’s cottages are highly sought after in Carmel by the Sea, CA and very rare in Pacific Grove, especially with an oversized lot and the views of the Monterey Bay this home has. Call your Realtor to make an appointment to see this home as in our current market, It will likely not last long.

Old Retreat Neighborhood Real Estate in Pacific Grove
115 1st St. is inside what would be considered Pacific Grove's Old Retreat neighborhood. The Old Retreat is a reference to the area in Pacific Grove which was home to the old Methodist summer retreat which took place in Pacific Grove every year during this towns early days of development. The Old Retreat was a very specific area of town located below Pine from New Monterey's border to around Congress Avenue, although today the general area around downtown is loosely referred to as the Old Retreat.
People love the Old Retreat area of Pacific Grove and Old Retreat real estate because of the uniquely Pacific Grove lifestyle it offers. The Old Retreat, as you will read below, was made of of tent structures in the early days so the lots are very small (30' x 60' to be exact) and don't allow for very large homes. The location is perfect as you can easily walk to the water, Lovers Point and downtown Pacific Grove. And although we are on rocky terrain, the terrain is relatively flat when compared with other seaside communities, making it an ideal place to walk. With all of that said, Pacific Grove's Old Retreat real estate is among the most desirable in the city.
Pacific Grove’s Old Retreat History
With 100 acres donated by the notorious local developer David Jacks, the Methodist Episcopal Church set off to develop a Christian Seaside Resort. Founded in 1875, Pacific Grove’s humble beginning was as a summer camp full of 30’ x 60’ tented lots where groups of Methodists came to rest, meditate and exchange ideas. The Pacific Grove Retreat was born.
Every summer would start with 3 weeks of prayer meetings held in the middle of the Retreat in what is now Jewell Park on the corner of 17th Street and Central Avenue. Just a block down 17th Street is the famous destination in Pacific Grove called Lover’s Point...Read more
